Harris Paints Dominica Ltd made history by becoming the first manufacturer and second company in Dominica to be ISO certified. The company was certified under the ISO: 2000 standards on January 23rd, 2005. SJS of New Jersey conducted the surveillance audit. DEXIA, the first and only other ISO compliant organization in Dominica to date, was first certified in 1999 under the ISO: 1999 series.
Mervin Williams, Administration Manager at Harris Paints, told Dominica Today that notwithstanding his company’s 28 year history and reputation for quality, certification under ISO resulted in significant benefits for his company. “We were aware that our products and customer service were excellent. We provided an excellent service to our customers but with the introduction of the quality management system, we were able to improve in some of the areas where we were lacking.” Williams added “ISO enabled us to focus more exactly on what customers’ needs are and help us to meet that need.”
Williams is hoping that Harris Paints’ new management system and global recognition as a quality organization will translate into increased business for the company both within the region and further a field. ISO certification he stated “gives us that feeling that we can now make greater strides as far as where we want to go in terms of market expansion, and brand recognition of our products.” Harris Paints has already begun to pursue new market development initiatives hoping to leverage its quality /ISO competency. The company is presently holding discussion with a French firm with a view to having the Harris paints distributed in Martinique.
