Twenty-four year old Herman Lawrence of Riviere Cyrique died earlier today when the vehicle in which he was traveling nose-dived 50 feet down a precipice in Red Gulley in the Sylvinia/Springfield area (about 12 kilometers from Roseau on the way to Sylvinia). The vehicle, a Suzuki Vitara, registration TC 763 was being driven at the time by Lawrence's 36-year old brother, Bertrand Ettienne.

According to sources close to the family, the brothers were en-route to Belles to work on a Dgicecl's cell site at about 9:00am when the accident occurred. It is alleged that Ettienne fell asleep at the wheel. The vehicle then veered off the road, running into the right embankment before somersaulting into a free-fall 50 feet into the precipice below. Lawrence died on impact, while Ettienne sustain minor injuries to his shoulder and hands.

Ettienne managed to crawl out of the wreckage for a precarious 50-feet rock climb all the way to the top of the road above to telephone in and seek help. He was rescued by a passing vehicle and taken to the Princess Margaret Hospital where he was treated and later relesed. However Lawrence's lifeless corpse had to be dug out of the wreck and hoisted in a rescue basket to the road by a extrication team from the Fire and Ambulance Service. Lawrence was pronounced dead by a doctor at the scene.

The police are continuing investigations into the matter. A coroner’s inquest touching the death of Lawrence will be convened followed by an autopsy
