Not even Tarina Simon could hold back the tears and jubilation on Saturday night
when she was declared the 2007 Digicel's "Rising Star" at the Party Stand in
Harbour Road, St. Michael, Barbados. Of course the news came as no surprise.
Virtually everyone in the Eastern Caribbean from Barbados to Grenada fully
expected her to walk away, hands down with the coveted title.
The singing sensation, who has since been rechristened 'Queen Tarina' by
thousands of adoring Dominicans, signaled her supremacy and true star power
early in the competition with a scintillating performance of Tina Turner's
"Simply the Best." Tarina’s immaculate and powerful rendition of the song sent
the entire audience in a frenzy and left them begging for more. Even the judges
were screaming and dancing away to the soulful groove as Tarina belted out one
high note after another.
As far as the judges were concerned this was the end of the competition.
Immediately appeals went out to the Caribbean to vote in favour of Tarina as she
was simply the best. And she proved to be as wildly popular with the fans as she
was talented.
The other nine contestants were by no means pushovers. Daina Barnes, the other
finalist from Antigua gave a good account of herself on Saturday night of which
she can be justly proud. But Tarina was just too good. Her amazing vocal
abilities, stage command and presence, and infectious personality were a cut
above the rest.
In the end she upstaged everybody. There was not a single dissenting voice in
the entire Eastern Caribbean when Tarina was declared the winner of the 2007
Digicel’s Rising Star competition. Tarina walked away with US$10,000.00 and a
recording contract with CRS Music. For her valiant effort, second placed Daina
Barnes received a trophy and a cheque for US$5,000.00.
Dominicans and the people of the Eastern Caribbean voted Tarina “simply the
best.” And the newly crowned starlet shed tears of joy as she thanked them for
voting her the 2007 Digicel's Rising Star winner. “I am going to give you the
best year of my life. I am so touched that you devoted your money and your time
to make me number one,” said Tarina.
