MWSU welcomes eleven Dominican students this fall

The Dominican students at Midwestern State University began the semester with a renewed spirit from the energy of eleven enthusiastic compatriots who joined the group recently. The new additions bring the Dominican contingent to 71 and the Caribbean contingent to 253. It is also the 15th year since Dominican students began enrolling at the Texas based university.

The new students are Nesia Shermer Augustine, Gerard Clifford Austrie, Dione Durand, Kevaughn Shanon Edwards, O'Neal Georges, Theona Honore, Cornelia Lewis, samara Estelle McIntyre, Shanelle McIntyre, Jehan N'Kono Monelle and Goddard Williams.

The Government of Dominica contributed $20,000 US to the scholarship fund that aids the program and the Ministry of Education facilitates the process. This is part of a 15 year long partnership that has seen almost 250 Dominican students obtain degrees at Midwestern.

The Caribbean program at Midwestern has expanded in recent years and eight more Dominicans will be accepted in January and another 25 in August 2008. The additional spaces created reflect a recent increase in applicants from Dominica and the high academic achievements of Dominican students.

Minister of Education, Hon. Vince Henderson, visited the university last year and pledged and delivered his government’s support of the program.
