The rank and file of the DLP seems completely enamored with Skerrit’s stewardship of both the party and government. Some have already begun to see him as the most successful labour leader since Oliver Leblanc. Since Skerrit took over the reigns of government from his immediate predecessor, the late Pierre Charles, he has been riding a wave of popularity, particularly among the younger generations of Labour. Having led the DLP to victory at the 2005 polls following his resounding defeat of Griffin St.Hilaire in the race for leadership of the party in 2004, no one within the labour camp seems prepared to challenge for the leadership. With the more ambitious labour hopefuls like St.Hiliare and Dr. William “Para” Riviere out of the way, the other Labour MPs and members seems content to play second fiddle. Commenting on the possible outcome for tomorrow’s contest, Ambrose George, Deputy Political Leader of the Party said, “I don’t foresee any major changes. I do not see any member of the DLP wanting to challenge Rossevelt Skerrit.”
At Sunday’s delegates’ conference, the DLP will also elect a new president for the party. Gerard Cools-Latigue, former President resigned his post to take up a position as a member of the Public Service Commission. Party officials are tight-lipped about how that race is shaping up or who might be the front-runner.
