AG fears crimes agaisnt tourists could jeopardize economy
Attorney General, Ian Douglas issues a call for an end to violence against tourists amidst mounting fears that such activities may negatively impact the economy.
Attorney General Ian Douglas has issued a call for the end of violence against tourists. The call follows closely on the hills of yet another attempted robbery of two visitors by escaped prisoner, Oliver Benta on December 27, 2005. Although these criminal activities against the tourists may be few and far apart, the impact on the industry and economy could be devastating. Mr. Douglas said such “illegal acts against the tourists who come to Dominica to spend money so that the country can earn foreign exchange…jeopardizes the entire economy.” He added that “law and order must be maintained in order for the industry to deliver a proper service to the people they serve.”
The AG pledged government’s commitment in 2006 to place greater focus on maintaining “the good spirit of law and order that exists in Dominica.” He added, “It is only in an atmosphere of peace and stability that the economy itself can continue to grow and flourish.”
