dominica2day: Making Dominica safer and more secure Making Dominica safer and more secure ================================================================================ Sean Douglas,Govt Press Sec on 21 November, 2007 12:53:17 The security and safety of the people of Dominica is high on the priority list of the Government of Prime Minister, Hon. Roosevelt Skerrit. In his Address to the Nation on Independence Day, November 3rd, the set piece occasion of the year, the Prime Minister stated: “Fellow Dominicans, an essential element of the quality of life of a people is the security they enjoy in their homes, at work and on the streets. Your Government is acutely aware of the security threats our people face. We want Dominica to be a safe and secure place to live, work and visit.” The Prime Minister revealed that in recent months his Government has: (a) Upgraded several Police Stations across the country. (b) Recruited and trained more policemen and women to bring the total force up to 444, of which 419 places have been filled. (c) Purchased 21 new vehicles for police stations across the country. (d) Provided training for 60 Fire Officers and embarked on an Outreach Fire Safety Training Programme for schools, workplaces and communities. (e) Purchased 2 new ambulances. (f) Started the process of recruiting 12 auxiliary prison officers. (g) Reintroduced Adult Education, Skills Training and a thorough rehabilitation programme for prison inmates to aid their reintegration into society. Meanwhile Government is committed to spending an additional $8 million in the 2007/2008 fiscal year on national security.
